The ask

A local Toronto fashion brand approached me, looking to build an online store.

The insight

The client was deep in the process of creating collections and visiting factories. As an online only business post Covid, the client was eager to create an experience online that would build a client base and help the brand establish their name.

why not shopify

Great question

My career has taught me to work smarter, but I also understand that new business owners are excited for their vision to come to life exactly as they imagined. I was hired strictly for UX and design, and not as a consultant.

So off we go building a design system and checkout flow manually.

creative territories

I did a lot of research on the current online shops that stood out to me for ease of use and accessibility. The client provided samples of product and marketing photography, so I had a ideas on how to structure the page to feature their vision.

I created three distinct directions to present and we spent a couple of sessions collaboarating on how Ahiri wanted their branding to look.

growing pains

The online retail space is a road well travelled of course, but the options for callouts and seasonal campaigns is what makes it exciting. We also made some layout decisions that larger stores would not, in order to infuse the site with a bit more character and build trust in the brand.

For example - as this was their first collection, I chose a two level navigation that was always visible over a mega menu. With a smaller collection there was no need to over categorize the items, so I made smaller category trees.

design

Educating the team on the importance of product tree structure. Displaying colour variants within each product rather than unique URLs, connecting to the inventory data base to display dynamic variables like available sizes in stock, creating a design system that can support several seasonal tags (sales), etc.
success

What happened next

After the first year, Ahiri did end up moving the existing site to Shopify. We've worked together since on some minor tweaks, and they even opened a location on Queen Street West.
